The research goals of the Biomedical Systems group are the modelling and reproduction of physiological and pathological conditions as well as of medical hardware applications to address clinical needs. With the Hardware-in-the-Loop approach or the real hardware system numerical models, new developed devices and control algorithms are investigated and tested under realistic conditions.

Skin Creator

The SkinCreator projects’ goal is set to invent new technological principles for devices in the emerging field of tissue engineering of skin. Read more

HIL Test Bench

The multidisciplinary research project "SmartShunt - The Hydrocephalus Project" aims at conducting the basic research necessary for the subsequent development of a smart cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunt for normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Read more

Tumor Tracking

This research project is about increasing the survival prospects for cancer patients with tumors in their torsos. These tumors may move, which require the increased irradiation of healthy tissue to ensure that the tumor is treated. Read more

Ventricular Volume Sensor


The ventricular volume sensor project is embedded in the Zurich Heart. It aims at providing a robust sensor signal for physiological control of ventricular assist devices. Read more

Zurich Heart

The Zurich Heart project is a multidisciplinary and inter-institutional cooperation between the University of Zurich (UZH), the UniversityHospital Zurich (USZ), the German Heart Institute Berlin and the ETH Zurich aimed at developing new technologies for left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Read more
