The VariLeg is a novel type of exoskeleton for paraplegics. It incorporates variable mechanical impedance (i.e. “softness”) to enhance the dynamic stability while walking.
The VariLeg Focus Project was run by a team of bachelor students in mechanical and electrical engineering and industrial design with coaching from SMS, RELab, ZHdK and pd|z in the autumn of 2014 and the spring of 2015.
The team will participate in the i-CREATe Student Innovation Challenge in the summer of 2015 and enter the first Cybathlon in 2016. The ultimate goal, however, is to contribute towards the development of a robust product that gives paraplegic people back the ability to walk in everyday life.
